There is an interesting background to the Cambodia gambling halls that sit just across the dividing line from next door Thailand, in which gambling hall gambling is illegal. Eight gambling dens are situated in a generally tiny location in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia gambling dens is in an excellent location, a 3 to 4 hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the two most popular wagering locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a huge business with Thai laborers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The phenomenal income acquired from the gambling halls ranges from $7.5 million to over 12.5 million, and there are a number of restrictions requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mainly Thai; however, financing sources are vague. The borders are officially open from 09:00 to 17:00, and although visas are apparently required to pass, there are methods around this, as is true of most border crossings.
The original Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in 1998, leaving just a single casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked ship casino, highlights one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and sixty table games. The Naga gambling den is open all hours with 42 tables of mini-baccarat banque, 4 tables of blackjack, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The original casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in the late nineties and the Golden Crown quickly opened. There are one hundred and fifty slot machines and five tables at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machines and 68 gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features three hundred slot machine games and 70 gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 one armed bandits and ninety six table games, including 87 punto banco (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five one armed bandits and sixty six of the normal tables, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, also a part of a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slots and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in a multinational resort and hotel compound that contains a number of conveniences on top of the casino, which offers ten thousand square feet of one hundred and thirty slot machines and eighty eight gaming tables.
